Understanding Allergy Testing
In general, the allergy testing process can be quick and comfortable. It typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the test, and you’ll leave with a better understanding of your allergy profile. There are two common types of testing:
Skin prick testing: This is the most common form of allergy testing. It involves a small scratch or prick of the skin, often described as a “fingernail scratch.” The allergen is introduced to the skin, and the reaction is observed.
Blood testing: When a patient suffers from severe reactions, a blood test may be required in order to avoid any form of anaphylaxis.

Common Allergens in Georgia
Georgia’s climate creates unique challenges for allergy sufferers. Our region experiences some of the highest pollen counts in the country, particularly during spring and fall. Common triggers include:
Spring (late February/early March through May): Tree pollens such as oak, hickory, walnut, maple, ash (and birch) are major triggers. Grass pollens may begin later in the spring.
Summer into early Fall (May through September): Grass pollens become more dominant, and by late summer (~August), weed pollens like ragweed start to rise.
Fall (August into November): Weed pollens (especially ragweed) are the main outdoor allergen triggers.
Year-round/indoor allergens: Dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and indoor mold growth affect many allergy sufferers throughout the year.
Why Treat Your Allergies?
Untreated allergies don't just cause discomfort; they can lead to complications like chronic sinusitis, ear infections, poor sleep quality, and reduced productivity. Many patients also find that allergies trigger or worsen asthma symptoms. Effective treatment improves your quality of life, helps you sleep better, and reduces your risk of developing related conditions.
